About me
Communication should look simple
As a plain language writer, I know that communication should look simple. Effective communication is a result of smart planning, integrating feedback, and maximizing channels to reach your audience. Then your message should be written so people can understand.
I’m a person
My wife and I are proud parents to 1 human daughter, 2 dogs, and 1 cat. I run groceries with my bike and panniers. I’ve won two bug eating contests (though those days are behind me), painted some murals, and would like to play a game of Bananagrams with you. I’ve worked where I’ve felt like I can make the world better, including the fields of education, transportation, and health care.
My values
As a queer woman (and parent), I strive constantly to be a better ally for oppressed and marginalized communities, including integrating an anti-racism lens to my work.
Service
My first position out of college was serving a Title I elementary school as an AmeriCorps volunteer. I’ve worked in government at the local, state, and federal levels. As Program Manager of Denver’s nonprofit Transit Alliance, I advocated for better public transportation and micromobility.
Compassion
As Colorado Medicaid’s digital communications specialist, my chief job duty was listening to our members and working to increase their well-being. That meant creating communications that instilled confidence, relieved stress, and could be understood quickly. Compassion considers the different levels we are literate, whether in health literacy, tech literacy, legal literacy, or simply how well we read.
Creativity
I find joy in creation. That’s the reason the closet under my stairs resembles a tiny English cottage, why I’ve written and illustrated two children’s books, and why I love to work in communications.
Learning
I’m never finished learning. On paper, that looks like a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Reed College and a Master of Public Policy from the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies. In practice, I’m the person who is always asking “why?” and constantly volunteering “Oh! I’ll send you an article I read about that!”
